The Second World War on eBay:
During the early part of the 1940′s, Hollywood made a number of World War II movies that not only sought to entertain, but also to heighten the spirit of “patriotism” in the American people. These films would influence the entry of the United States into the war and support our military effort when finally involved.
War was raging in Great Britain and throughout Europe while America was still in its isolationist period. Director Alfred Hitchcock released Foreign Correspondent in 1940 allowing American audiences an insightful look into the war without actually providing the identity of the enemy.
Charlie Chaplin chose to be more direct. In the Great Dictator (1940), directed by Chaplin, he gave us a scorching spoof of fascism and the Nazi party. Individuals were easily identified behind the thinly veiled character names used, and portrayed as the dictatorial, power hungry, tyrants that they were. The production was brilliantly written and executed by Chaplin and is still regarded as one of the most classic films of the century.
After the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, America entered into the war. Hollywood would now begin the release of some of the most popular War movies in history. Republic Pictures film Flying Tigers (1942) showcased American combat pilots fighting for China against Japanese invaders just before the invasion of Pearl Harbor. The film stared John Wayne, who throughout his career would prove to be one of the most patriotic celebrities of all time.
1942 honored the tragic, but courageous story about the battle of Wake Island. While the events were grimly real, the Hollywood portrayal was inaccurate. The film gave audiences the impression that the island’s defenders fought to the last man, when in truth, the overwhelming odds and repeated assaults by Japanese troops led to the surrender of the island. However, Hollywood had not failed in their telling of the story as the film Wake Island served its primary purpose regarding war time propaganda and fueled feelings of patriotism.
In 1943 the film classic Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, clearly positioned the Nazi’s as the villains in the war and depicted the conquered people of Europe as glorified, courageous resisters of Nazi Germany.
Casablanca’s success, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, helped to establish both Bogart and Bergman as superstars. In the history of motion pictures, Casablanca will always be considered a World War II classic and honored as one of the best films of the twentieth century.
Many other films were produced that served the needs of propaganda and patriotism, but the hallmark of this effort would be the seven-part series created by filmmaker Frank Capra entitled Why We Fight. The basic principle of all propaganda films was to create a patriotic mentality that recognized great sacrifices were necessary in order to defeat the enemy.
It wouldn’t be until after the war that true victories would be documented and a more realistic perspective of the casualties and cruelties of war would be understood.
Movies during this period in time helped to keep the American peoples patriotic spirits up and provided them the justification necessary to support the defeat of the “axis of evil.” As they had done with film during the time of the depression, Hollywood’s World War II movies again gave audiences a full-length mirror that reflected their society, values, beliefs, and place in history.

WWII Weapons: As the war developed, so did the weapons used throughout it. From the straight forward rifle, right down to the development of the nuclear bomb, weapons were developed to try to gain an advantage over the opposition.
The Second World War is normally credited for bringing into being the stable version of the hand held machine gun. While used in the World War I, the machine gun, otherwise known as the Gatlin gun, was very inaccurate and couldn’t be moved about. Yet with the need for development in World War II, machine guns were manufactured smaller and the creation of submachine guns meant that they could be carried by even infantry troops. During that time most of the soldiers started toting the new submachine guns.
Another weapons development in world war 2 were the infamous V1 and V2 rockets. The V1 was more commonly referred to as the Doodlebug. It was the first ever guided missile and was fired with the aid of ramps from Germany in 1944 and 1945. Developed by the German Luftwaffe, these “vengeance” weapons were feared throughout the entirety of the blitz. Not only were these the first pilot less missiles to be created, they had an sound mechanism on them that made them make a high pitched noise as it dropped from the sky so civilians knew when one was coming. The V2 rocket was later created and did not require the large ramps to launch from. These are far more like the heavy guided missiles we have today, launching from a standing up position and are accredited for the first steps of putting a man on the moon.
The final most significant weapon development of World War 2 was the nuclear bomb, created by the USA and dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is normally referred to as the weapon that ended the war. Bombs were used in great numbers throughout the 6 years, yet none of them were anywhere near as powerful as the atomic bomb that the USA used. People to this day still argue whether or not it was ethically correct to have even used it to end the war, yet it accomplished its purpose and goes to show how far technology can advance through times of war. The bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki caused some of the worst combined casualties in any of the world wars. The shear numbers that died in the hundreds of thousands.
Various Historical Footage of World War II, Hitler, Nazis, US Soldiers, US Marines, German Soldiers, Warfare. World War II, or the Second World War (often abbreviated as WWII or WW2), was a global military conflict lasting from 1939 to 1945, which involved most of the world’s nations, including all of the great powers: eventually forming two opposing military alliances, the Allies and the Axis. It was the most widespread war in history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilised. In a state of “total war,” the major participants placed their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities at the service of the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by significant events involving the mass death of civilians, including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare, it was the deadliest conflict in human history, resulting in 50 million to over 70 million fatalities. The war is generally accepted to have begun on 1 September 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany and Slovakia, and subsequent declarations of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Germany set out to establish a large empire in Europe. From late 1939 to early 1941, in a series of campaigns and treaties, Germany conquered or subdued much of continental Europe; amid Nazi-Soviet agreements, the nominally neutral Soviet Union fully or partially occupied and annexed …

WALNUT CREEK — When Keith Brooks Jr. checked his inbox Tuesday, the day after his father’s death, he got a reminder that the 85-year-old never let technology pass him by.
“I came into work for a couple hours (Tuesday) morning and I had e-mail from him from the weekend,” he said. “That was weird.”
A few weeks earlier, his father had joined Facebook. The World War II veteran started working with computers when they were programmed by moving wires around, and he never stopped.
Keith Brooks Sr. was found dead Monday in a fire at his house in the 300 block of Drayton Court in Walnut Creek, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District. The county coroner reported Tuesday that he died from smoke inhalation.
Born in San Bernardino, Brooks entered the Army in World War II and was put in an educational program at Stanford. But when the Army ran short of infantrymen, they were shipped out to Germany, said Herb Denny, a friend of Brooks who was in the program with him.
Brooks had learned to drive a truck in the Forest Service, so the Army made him a Jeep driver, Denny said. “He was a great guy … a very very quiet person,” Denny said. “Just a careful considerate kind of guy.”
After Germany fell to the Allies, Brooks and Denny were shipped to the Pacific theater. “We were intended to invade Japan,” Denny said. But they never got past the Philippines, he said, because the atomic bombs ended the war.
Decades later, he visited Germany again with his wife. “I remember him telling me one time that they’d gone and visited Hitler’s gardens,” Brooks Jr. said. “Last time he was there, the ground was still smoking from the bombing runs.”
After graduating with a degree in business from UC Berkeley, he worked for four decades at the Breuners furniture store. He and his wife, who died six years ago, raised their two sons in Walnut Creek.
He worked in accounting and insurance — and brought computing technology to the company when it was still brand new, Brooks Jr. said.
After he retired, he stayed active at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Walnut Creek, Brooks Jr. said, and would often come over to his son’s house on Sunday afternoons to watch sports. “He was just a hard worker, conscientious, very much of that ‘Greatest Generation,’” Brooks Jr. said.
One of his trips was with other members of the 86th Blackhawk Infantry Division. He created and maintained the webpage for the Acer now-disbanded division’s association of veterans.

There are all kinds of innovative rides and attractions in the Orlando area, but if a prize were to be given to the one providing the most thrills it might be awarded to Warbird Adventues in Kissimmee. Warbird offers guests a ride in a World War II vintage training aircraft, the T6. Not only do you get to ride in the aircraft, you can also fly it even if you have no previous flight experience.
This is not a ride in a flight simulator, you go up in an actual plane and you can take your choice of a looping aerobatic flight or a smooth scenic flight. You don’t just watch the scenery but take control of the plane, with an experienced instructor showing you how to do it.
In addition, you perform all the maneuvers yourself under the guidance of the Warbird instructors and they will take you to whatever level you are comfortable with. The experience is tailored to your experience, and if you are already a pilot, the flights at Warbird are also a chance to log more hours.
If you choose the aerobatic flight you will perform maneuvers including 60-75 degree steep turns, aileron rolls, barrel rolls, loops, Cuban eights and reverse Cuban eights.
Not only do you get to experience the flight one time, but you can also take home a video or still picture record of your flight to show your friends or to serve as a nice remembrance of the flight.
If you bring along friends or family members who will not be flying, Warbird also has a museum featuring restored World War II aircraft.
In case you were wondering, these flights provide thrills, but they are not cheap thrills! If you choose a 30 minute flight it will cost you 0, a 60 minute flight is 0, and a 15 minute flight costs 0. The flight time does not include taxi time and warm up. If you want to experience the aerobatic maneuvers then you have to choose either the 30 minute or 60 minute options. The flight DVD souvenirs are available for extra on all of the flights.
Airbird gives some recommendations about what to wear during your flying experience. They advise you to wear comfortable casual clothes. Also, your footwear should be sturdy soled, closed toe shoes. Sandals or flip flops are not good because they might fall off your feet during aerobatic maneuvers. Tennis shoes are OK. In addition, a shirt with a collar will be more comfortable so the harness straps do not rub on your neck. A pair of sunglasses is also good to bring along.
While it is possible to just walk-in and then fly, it is far better to book your flight in advance to make sure that you actually get a chance to fly on the day when it is most convenient for you.
Warbird is located at Kissimmee Gateway Airport and their address and contact information is as follows: Kissimmee Gateway Airport, 233 N. Hoagland Blvd., Kissimmee, FL 34741, USA

World War II Uniforms: With so many different countries fighting in the war, Uniforms played a huge part. The typical neutral greens worn by British infantry soldiers were very much so distinguished from the dark blue/black uniforms that the Germans wore. Yet while the uniforms played a great deal in identifying ones friend, the uniforms also offered valuable protection.. Standard uniform did not just include the uniform clothes; equipment was issued with it as well. The following would be given to an infantry solider would include the following: Uniform, a helmet, a gas mask, a haversack, some combat boots, and an entrenching device. All of this was standard for an infantry troop to receive and would offer protection in Trench war fare. It was very important for each soldier to hang on to each piece of government issued clothing or accessorie just in case there wasn’t extra gear available.
The most protective out of all of these was the helmet, normally made of metal. These were introduced as standard throughout trench war fare in World War One for French soldiers as more and more people were reported dead through head wounds. The idea was then carried on through the Second World War. They were not meant to protect from bullets, but from shrapnel. The most common type of helmets for the allies was the Brodie helmet. Made out of steel, this helmet was designed by John L. Brodie and was used for most of the Second World War, with new versions coming out every few years. The Germans possessed the infamous Stahlhelm helmet, which translates to Steel Helmet. This replaced the old Pickelhaube helmets (spiked helmet) as it offered far more protection than the out of date helmets.
Because of gas warfare being used in the First World War, the Gas masks were issued as part of the standard uniform for soldiers, yet ironically no gas attacks were used, but due to the lack of preparation first time round, Allied troops wanted to be safer than sorry.
Finally, probably the most unusually named piece of equipment laid out with a uniform is the entrenching device. While the name sounds technical, all it referred to was a shovel for digging into the ground for cover from enemy troops. These were primarily used in the First World War, yet they were issued to Second World War troops to help dig out protection if needed from oncoming opposition.
