Effective Internet Creates Online Presence for North East War Memorials Project

(PRWEB) June 30, 2006

The North East War Memorials Project is to raise awareness of War Memorials and their significance through a brand new website, produced by Effective Internet. The website requires the collation and updating of almost 3500 War Memorials in the North East of England, making them available to the public.

This major development, made possible by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), will assist the Project Group in educating the public about War Memorials. The Project Group will work with local schools and history groups to produce education packs for schools and information guidelines for those wanting to research their own War Memorials. The resulting information will be put onto a searchable database and be available to all via the brand new website.

Visitors who have booked to attend the talk by Peter Hart on the Battle of the Somme, being given at the Durham Light Infantry Museum at 2pm on 1st July will also be invited to see a preview of the website, and to meet representatives from the War Memorials Project Group and Effective Internet. The project is expected to be available online later this year.

Mrs Janet Brown, chairman of the Project said “This is a very satisfying outcome to a project which shows how the effects of war can be devastating, leaving nobody untouched. If War Memorials help people to think about such things, this is reward in itself.”

Keith Bartlett, Heritage Lottery Fund Manager for the North East, said “This is a fantastic project that will enable local communities across the region to discover the contribution made by the people of the North East to conflict across the world. Each War Memorial tells so many stories that should never be forgotten and, thanks to this project, future generations will be able to explore with pride this part of our shared history.”
